My Phone Smells Like Swedish Meatballs

Imagine a world where the lack of cell battery isn’t a worry. #firstworldproblems

Let’s go back in time. Remember that Disney original movie called Smart House (1999), featuring Kevin Kilner, Ryan Merriman, and Katey Sagal—now a Son’s of Anarchy star? You know, the movie about the teen who wins a futuristic robot house with a built-in maid named PAT? My childhood imagination ran wild, thanks to Disney’s imagination. What if our house could do our laundry, make our lasagna dinner, or absorb spills through the floor?

Ikea is making that leap for smart homes—in a big way.

Modern Day Smart House

A press release by the Swedish company announced their newest endeavor—the Home Smart line, which consists of furniture, such as bedside tables, desks, and lamps, with the ability to wirelessly charge your mobile device. “But what about my existing Ikea furniture?,” you ask? No worries; Ikea has developed charging pads that can be purchased to cater to your existing furniture.

How Does It Work?

Ikea is using Qi wireless charging technology in their furniture, recognized as the most used wireless charging standard worldwide. The technology has that capability to charge 80-some various smartphones through the Wireless Power Consortium, which holds 200-plus members including Samsung, Microsoft, HTC, Verizon Wireless, and others. The problem: iPhone is not one of 80. The solution: Ikea has found a way around that too. They will sell phone cases that make loyal Apple users’ phones capable for wireless charging. Ba-da-boom, ba-da-bang.

On the Market

The products are set to launch in North America and Europe mid-April this year. Ikea, I’ll be counting the days.

P.S. Thank you for being considerate Ikea; you’re just in time for my birthday. Mom…?
